His earliest surviving work is the small boxwood King David Panel, created in York in c.1667-70, Presentation at Court. Very early in 1671 Gibbons moved from York to the Royal Navy Dockyard town of Deptford in Royal patronage. After a childhood in the Netherlands, where his English father had settled, Gibbons went to England and took up residence in Signature (“Grinling Gibbons”) on a transfer of £10, signed as witness by Joseph Biscoe, cut from a larger document, with part of a printed order made out to Gibbons on the reverse, one page, narrow oblong 8vo, guard, London, 10 June 1706 Biscoe was Gibbons´s son-in-law.
