Bourdieu and ‘Habitus’ The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu approaches power within the context of a comprehensive ‘theory of society’ which – like that of Foucault – we can’t possibly do justice to here, or easily express in the form of applied methods (Navarro 2006).

In sociology, habitus is a concept developed by Pierre Bourdieu and refers to the norms, values, attitudes, and behaviours of a particular social group (or social class). The idea is often, then, associated with the idea of cultural capital and can also be applied to the idea of cultural deprivation and concepts such as immediate and deferred gratification and the arguments of Sugarman. In this introduction to Pierre Bourdieu, I look at a number of his key concepts: Habitus, Field & Cultural Capital, while focusing primarily on habitus.
